Mesothelioma Treatments Making Headway When Combined in Multimodality Therapy

Friday, January 7th, 2011
Although no cure has been discovered for mesothelioma, recent clinical trials and research studies have made great strides. Multimodality therapy, or the combination of multiple treatment options, has begun to show promising results in extending the life expectancy and quality of life for mesothelioma patients.
Malignant mesothelioma is a rare cancer caused almost exclusively by asbestos exposure. Every year in the United States approximately 2,000 to 3,000 new cases of mesothelioma are reported. However, as a result of new methods of detections able to diagnose the cancer in its earlier stages, the survival rate for mesothelioma patients has improved.
In most cases, mesothelioma rarely reacts positively to only one form of treatment. Radiation and chemotherapy coupled with surgery is often recommended to patients in the early stages of diagnosis. Though these treatments do not cure mesothelioma, when coupled with immunotherapy and other alternative therapies such as acupuncture, patients experienced reduced symptoms and an improved quality of life. A number of patients are now going on to survive the cancer for five years and beyond.
The one deciding factor in many treatments is the immune system. Studies of patients who have survived or been cured of mesothelioma show that therapy focusing on boosting the immune system has produced positive results.
With increasing reports of mesothelioma survivors and research breakthroughs, doctors and scientists are constantly working to improve the life expectancy for mesothelioma patients. The combination of treatments has greatly increased the chance of positive results. In most cases, multimodality therapy has extended the patient’s life expectancy by months.
Additional information on mesothelioma and multimodality therapy may be found through the Mesothelioma Center.
