Mesothelioma Study Finds Successful Salvage Chemotherapy

Wednesday, December 29th, 2010
In a recent study published In the Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology, researchers from Shinshu University evaluated the role of salvage chemotherapy for the treatment of mesothelioma cancer.
Mesothelioma is an aggressive form of cancer primarily caused by exposure to asbestos. Although there is no cure for this disease, treatment options are improving as researchers continue to conduct clinical trials and other various studies.
The study, titled “Successful Salvage Chemotherapy with Gemcitabine and Vinorelbine in a Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma Patient Previously Treated with Pemetrexed,” tested a different chemotherapy approach after an initial method resulted in a relapse of malignant mesothelioma.
The patient first underwent a left extrapleural pneumonectomy. Three years later, the patient developed anterior chest wall and retroperitoneal masses that had metastasized from the pleural mesothelioma.
The first chemotherapy regimen included two cycles of carboplatin and pemetrexed, a common approach for treating mesothelioma cancer. After disease progression continued, the patient was then treated with gemcitabine and vinorelbine every two weeks. Salvage chemotherapy is a form of treatment for patients who have not positively responded to the initial treatment. In many cases, salvage chemotherapy is used after cancer recurrence.
The new chemotherapy was well tolerated and the tumors reduced significantly in size. The patient eventually received a total of 12 cycles of gemcitabine and vinorelbine, which resulted in 8.5 months of progression-free survival.
Following the successful treatment, T. Agatsuma and colleagues concluded, “Gemcitabine plus vinorelbine chemotherapy may be a candidate regimen for salvage chemotherapy against malignant pleural mesotheliomas.”
