NY mesothelioma attorney Joseph W. Belluck points to new asbestos use study which estimates that 20 percent of mesothelioma deaths go unreported.
New York, NY (PRWEB) February 1, 2011
New York personal injury attorney Joseph W. Belluck says a new study underscores the fact that while cases of mesothelioma have increased substantially, the full impact of asbestos cancer remains far bigger and is still unknown.“Mesothelioma is a terrible disease and one that has been underestimated for far too long,” says Belluck, a partner in Belluck & Fox LLP, a New York law firm that represents mesothelioma victims.
“Asbestos-related disease is more prevalent than many people suspect,” Belluck says. “Even today, asbestos remains widespread in New York, and tens of thousands of people are at risk of developing mesothelioma.”
A recent article in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives estimates that, for every four to five people worldwide who are diagnosed with mesothelioma, at least one case goes unreported.
People exposed to asbestos inhale the microscopic asbestos fibers. The toxic fibers lodge in their lungs and can cause mesothelioma symptoms decades later.
From 1920 to 1970, the United States led all countries in the use of asbestos in building materials, automotive components and insulation. In recent years, the U.S. has also witnessed the most mesothelioma deaths — approximately 36,500 deaths from 1994 to 2008 out of 174,000 mesothelioma deaths recorded worldwide.
Even that number undercounts the true death toll of mesothelioma, Belluck says.
Some countries that are large users of asbestos, such as China, Russia, India and Thailand, have historically not tracked mesothelioma cases. Based on those countries’ past rates of asbestos consumption, occupational health researchers estimate approximately 38,900 mesothelioma deaths occurring worldwide have not been reported.
“It’s disturbing, but not surprising, based on our litigation experience,” the New York mesothelioma attorney says. “Some countries tried for decades to ignore the harm of asbestos.”
Countries that have increased the use of asbestos in recent decades can expect higher numbers of mesothelioma deaths in the decades ahead, the researchers say.
Fortunately, in New York and the United States, the legal system allows mesothelioma victims to bring lawsuits and seek compensation from the employers and manufacturers that exposed people to cancer-causing asbestos.
Belluck says it is important for people to contact a New York mesothelioma lawyer if they or a family member has been diagnosed with mesothelioma. Compensation is often available to NYC victims of mesothelioma who file claims, he says, and there are various legal options to help mesothelioma sufferers pay for their medical bills and treatments.
