NYC Mesothelioma Expert Sees Help For Asbestos-Disease Sufferers in IBM ‘Jeopardy!’ Win

Joseph W. Belluck of New York City’s Belluck & Fox law firm says the leap in artificial intelligence demonstrated on a game show could translate well to the medical field and mesothelioma treatment.

Joseph W. Belluck
Quote startComputers that can help with a complex medical diagnosis will be especially helpful for mesothelioma victims...their symptoms are often confused with other conditions, and the earlier the disease is accurately diagnosed, the better the survival odds.Quote end
New York (PRWEB) February 19, 2011 –
A New York personal injury attorney who focuses on asbestos exposure claims says recently aired “Jeopardy!” episodes featuring an IBM computer could bring positive developments to mesothelioma sufferers.
Joseph W. Belluck, a partner in the New York City law firm of Belluck & Fox, LLP, said the advances in artificial intelligence illustrated by the IBM computer’s win against the popular game show’s most successful human contestants indicates that artificial intelligence is increasingly able to understand and properly respond to complex conditions, such as human diseases.
“IBM’s Watson was able to weigh numerous options in response to ‘Jeopardy!’ questions – or answers, actually – and respond more quickly and more accurately than humans, and that also means that computers are one step closer to assisting physicians as diagnostic tools,” Belluck said.
Belluck is a New York personal injury attorney whose law firm has recovered millions of dollars in compensation for New York residents suffering from mesothelioma, a respiratory cancer related to asbestos exposure. The firm has established a website to provide information about the disease, which can be found at http://www.mesotheliomahelp.net/.
“Computers that can help with a complex medical diagnosis will be especially helpful for mesothelioma victims, since their symptoms are often confused with other conditions, and the earlier the disease is accurately diagnosed, the better the survival odds are,” Belluck said.
The demonstration “Jeopardy!” episodes that aired February 14-16 pitted the game show’s top earner, Brad Rutter, and 74-game winner Ken Jennings against Watson, an IBM computer developed to answer questions posed in normal human speech. Though it made several blunders, the machine handily bested the humans in a single three-round game.
IBM followed up on the game show victory by announcing a partnership with Columbia University, the University of Maryland and Nuance Communications Inc. to develop a cybernetic physician’s assistant with voice recognition ability.
In as little as 18 months, the cybernetic PA could be ready to respond to physicians’ inquiries by instantly combing all related texts, reference materials, cases, journals and other medical literature to help form a diagnosis.
“Having this volume of information instantly available will be an incredibly valuable advance. Mesothelioma victims need as many options as possible to fight this terrible disease,” Belluck said.
“It’s also important that mesothelioma sufferers have the assistance of legal experts who can draw upon their stores of knowledge and experience,” Belluck added. “At Belluck & Fox, our attorneys put their experience and knowledge to work to help ensure that companies that exposed workers to asbestos are held accountable for the pain and suffering they have caused.”
About Belluck & Fox, LLP
Belluck & Fox, LLP, is a nationally recognized law firm that represents individuals with asbestos and mesothelioma claims, as well as victims of crime, medical malpractice, motorcycle crashes, lead paint and other serious injuries. The firm provides personalized and professional representation and has won nearly $350 million in compensation for clients and their families.
Partner Joseph W. Belluck is AV-rated by Martindale-Hubbell and is listed in New York Magazine’s “Best Lawyers in the New York Area” and in Super Lawyers. Mr. Belluck has won numerous cases involving injuries from asbestos, defective medical products, tobacco and lead paint, including a recent asbestos case that settled for more than $12 million.
Partner Jordan Fox is a well-known asbestos and mesothelioma attorney who has been named to the Best Lawyers in America, New York Magazine’s “Best Lawyers in the New York Area” and to Super Lawyers. On two separate occasions his verdicts were featured as the National Law Journal’s Largest Verdict of the Year.
In September, Belluck & Fox, LLP, won a coveted spot on a list of America's best law firms, which was published jointly by U.S. News & World Report and Best Lawyers magazine. The listing showcased 8,782 different law firms ranked in one or more of 81 major practice areas.

Mesothelioma Victims Center's 2011 Initiative Focuses On Providing An Unparalleled Free Service For US Navy Veterans Diagnosed With Mesothelioma

The Mesothelioma Victims Center, and its unequaled free services were created after a close family member, who served in the United States Navy, was diagnosed with mesothelioma. This diagnosis occured nearly 40 years after his exposure to asbestos, on board a US Naval Vessel. The group says, "The saddest thing about mesothelioma is it does not rear its ugly head immediately after exposure to asbestos. Tragically, this incredibly rare form of cancer may take decades to show up, and every victim we talk to is stunned, a mesothelioma diagnosis happened to them." The Mesothelioma Victims Center says, "While US Navy Veterans diagnosed with mesothelioma are our priority, there is nothing we would not do for a victim, or their loved ones, when it comes to this rare form of cancer." For more information just diagnosed victims of mesothelioma can call the Mesothelioma Victims Center anytime at 866-714-6466, or they can contact the group via its web site at http://MesotheliomaVictimsCenter.Com

Quote startwe literally want to be the first call a just diagnosed mesothelioma victim, or their loved ones make, so we can try to provide them with free world class help, advice, and supportQuote end
(Vocus/PRWEB) February 14, 2011
The Mesothelioma Victims Center says, "About 250 US citizens are diagnosed with mesothelioma each month. Of this group, one third served in the US Navy, another third worked in oil refineries, power plants, in shipyards, mines, as plumbers, pipe fitters, boiler technicians, city, or county municipal water workers, or auto repair technicians." The group says, "There is no other group in the US as passionate about helping victims, and their loved ones, and if you call us, we will make certain you get nothing but the best, which includes the names, and direct contact information for the best mesothelioma trial law firms, or attorneys in the US, not some middleman marketing law firm advertising for individuals, or their family members dealing with a mesothelioma diagnosis." For more information please call the Mesothelioma Victims Center anytime at 866-714-6466, or contact the group via its web site at http://MesotheliomaVictimsCenter.Com
The Mesothelioma Victims Center free service includes assistance if the mesothelioma victim, needs help with VA, or Social Security disability, a customized report detailing all the healthcare treatment options in the area of the mesothelioma victim, family counseling, and assistance, as well as the names of the best actual mesothelioma trial law firms, or trial attorneys in the US, not a mesothelioma personal injury marketing law firm advertising on cable TV. The group says, "We literally want to be the first call a just diagnosed mesothelioma victim, or their loved ones make, so we can try to provide them with free world class help, advice, and support. Just as importantly we want to make certain they get pointed in the right direction." http://MesotheliomaVictimsCenter.com
The Mesothelioma Victims Center is the premier mesothelioma advocate, and watchdog in the United States, for victims of mesothelioma. They say, "The Internet, talk radio, and cable TV are loaded with advertisements, about compensation, and or treatments for mesothelioma, ads talking about mesothelioma class actions, and or lawsuits, related to this rare form of cancer. Unfortunately, the vast majority of the attorneys, or law firms advertising for help, compensation, or heath care options for victims dealing with a mesothelioma diagnosis are middlemen marketing law firms, or personal injury marketing law firms-not the actual trial law firms, that will prosecute these cases." The group says, "We want to make certain all mesothelioma victims get to the actual trial law firms, or attorneys, that have the best record in achieving significant results for their clients dealing with a mesothelioma diagnosis-not a middleman marketing personal injury law firm, and we will give you their names, and contact numbers. You just decide who you like the best-no other group in the world does this." http://MesotheliomaVictimsCenter.Com

New York Mesothelioma Lawyer Criticizes Canadian Town's Bid to Open Asbestos Mine

Joseph W. Belluck, a New York attorney who represents mesothelioma victims, urges Canadian officials to deny a loan guarantee that would restart an inactive asbestos mine and lead to more production of the known carcinogen.

Joseph W. Belluck
Quote startAs I’ve continually said, it’s time to put an end to asbestos production and use and put public safety first.Quote end
New York, New York (PRWEB) February 11, 2011
New York personal injury attorney Joseph W. Belluck expressed shock this week at a small Canadian town’s bid to reinvigorate a dormant asbestos mine.
Despite acknowledging “the mineral’s dangers and the harm it has done,” the president of the Asbestos, Quebec-based mine, G. Bernard Coulombe, told the New York Times that his local economy would receive a much-needed boost if it restarted the mine’s asbestos production. Coulombe estimated the mine could create about 400 jobs in the town of Asbestos.
The asbestos mineral has been linked to lung cancer and mesothelioma, an aggressive and deadly form of cancer which results from breathing in asbestos fibers that become lodged in the thin membrane that lines and encases the lungs. Each year, more than 90,000 people die from asbestos exposure.
“This idea of creating jobs at the expense of human lives is outrageous,” said Belluck, a founding attorney of Belluck & Fox, a New York law firm that represents mesothelioma victims across the U.S.
“You’re going to solve your town’s economic woes by causing human suffering? That defies common sense,” Belluck said. “As I’ve continually said, it’s time to put an end to asbestos production and use and put public safety first.”
According to the New York Times, Coulombe is seeking approval of a $58 million loan guarantee from the Quebec government that would support expansion of the now inactive mine and allow shipment of asbestos to developing countries such as India, Pakistan and Vietnam, which typically have weaker work safety laws and historically fail to track mesothelioma cases.
A recent article in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives estimates that approximately 38,900 mesothelioma deaths occurring worldwide have not been reported in those countries and others.
“Mesothelioma is a tragic disease, and all countries must recognize that they can no longer ignore the harm caused by asbestos,” Belluck said. “Simply put, asbestos kills, and its use should be banned around the globe.”
Coulombe says the mine would turn out chrysotile asbestos, which he claims is not a deadly mineral.
However, Philip Landrigan, Dean of Global Health at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, wrote in a letter to Quebec Premier Jean Charest that “[c]hrysotile asbestos causes serious harm to health,” and added that “there is no safe exposure level. It goes on killing for generations.”
Additionally, 36 prominent doctors and public health researchers from 21 countries have written a letter to Charest that condemns the asbestos mine’s expansion and urges Quebec to deny the loan.
“I hope the Quebec government gives appropriate weight to the very serious health concerns raised by opponents of this mine,” Belluck said. “As an attorney who has represented numerous mesothelioma victims and witnessed the devastating impact of asbestos exposure on their lives and the lives of their families, I can’t imagine how anyone could support restarting this deadly operation.”

The decision was in keeping with Miles for Meso mission to attract professional runners while raising funds and awareness of mesothelioma, said Davis. A 4K tribute walk/run has also been added.
“Partnering with the Simmons firm and Miles for Meso has always been a pleasure,” Davis said. “I’m looking forward to having a great race this year and promoting more awareness of mesothelioma.”
The race, hosted by the Boca Raton Road Runners Miles for Meso club, kicks off Sunday, Feb. 13, 2011, at Spanish River Park. Preregistration begins at 5:45 a.m. and both races start at 7:30 a.m.
In its first year, the South Florida Miles for Meso race raised more than $15,000 for mesothelioma research. Davis said he expects a strong turnout for the 4K Tribute walk and expects more than 350 total people to participate in the race.
“If you come to Miles for Meso you can expect to meet the greatest folks around South Florida who put their hearts and souls into bringing awareness to a misunderstood disease and have fun while doing it,” Davis said.
Every year 3,000 new Americans are diagnosed with mesothelioma, a rare cancer caused by asbestos exposure, which has no cure. Miles for Meso is a nationwide effort by runners, survivors, patients, their families, advocates and medical researchers to start a conversation about mesothelioma and the need for research. Davis said by working together, a cure will be found.
Miles for Meso races in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, North Carolina and Florida have raised more than $100,000 for mesothelioma research since the program first started. This year one hundred percent of the funds raised at the South Florida race will benefit the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation, the leading national non-profit organization dedicated to funding peer-reviewed research of mesothelioma and providing patient support programs for mesothelioma patients and their families.

The Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation awarded grant funding to seven promising mesothelioma research projects.

Washington, DC (Vocus/PRWEB) February 10, 2011
The Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (Meso Foundation) awarded $700,000 of funding to seven new mesothelioma research projects from around the world, bringing its total to over $7.1 million. The Meso Foundation’s Grant Program supports the Foundation’s mission of ending the suffering caused by mesothelioma through development of better treatments and a cure.
Meso Foundation’s Grant Program requires that all projects undergo a rigorous peer-review process managed by the organization’s Science Advisory Board. Only the best and most promising research projects, as ranked by world renowned mesothelioma experts, go on to being funded. This year, in addition to high quality proposals submitted by scientists dedicated to mesothelioma research, the call for grant applications also garnered the interest of brilliant scientists from other fields whose projects build upon a body of science from other cancers and medical conditions.
“The Foundation has selected proposals that will lead to new treatment options for patients with mesothelioma. Clearly, the Meso Foundation Grants Program continues to have a significant impact on mesothelioma research conducted world-wide,” said Dr. Raffit Hassan, Senior Investigator at the National Cancer Institute and former Chair of the Foundation’s Science Advisory Board, under whose leadership this round of research was selected.
“We selected seven exceptional grants for funding, but certainly wish we could have funded more,” said Dr. Lee Krug, Director of the Mesothelioma Program at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and the incoming Chair of Meso Foundation’s Science Advisory Board.
Among exciting studies in this year’s group, one comes from the University of Minnesota where Dr. Manish Patel is evaluating biomarkers in a Phase I trial to determine which patients might respond and benefit from one particular targeted immune therapy. The therapy in question involves the administration of the measles virus into the tumor cells in the chest cavity, thereby infecting them and causing them to die.
Another study, conducted by Dr. Morgan Schulz at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, if successful, may be a promising option for both pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma patients. Through localized drug delivery via nanoparticles, Dr. Schulz’ study attempts to prevent recurrence of disease, by targeting the hard-to-get-to microscopic cells left behind after surgery.
The full list of projects awarded grant funding is available at curemeso.org/grants2010.
The Meso Foundation instituted its grant funding program in 2000 and has since awarded over $7.1 million to critical research, stimulating the field of mesothelioma research and encouraging scientists to devote their life-work to this under-researched cancer. Four researchers who had previously been funded by the Meso Foundation were able to multiply their impact through the Department of Defense (DoD), which in the last three years has awarded a cumulative total of over $5 million for mesothelioma research. The Meso Foundation was instrumental in spearheading and executing the inclusion of mesothelioma as a disease eligible for funding by the DoD.
Mesothelioma is a malignant tumor of the lining of the lung, abdomen, or heart known to be caused by exposure to asbestos. Medical experts consider it one of the most aggressive and deadly of all cancers. Approximately 3,000 Americans are diagnosed with mesothelioma every year.
ABOUT THE MESOTHELIOMA APPLIED RESEARCH FOUNDATION
The Meso Foundation is the leading organization dedicated to funding peer-reviewed mesothelioma research, providing patient support services and education, and advocating for increased federal funding for research. Mesothelioma funding, per death, has historically been extremely low, and even as recently as 2007, the NCI reported that mesothelioma receives as little as 9 times less funding than other cancers. The Meso Foundation was founded in 2000 to address this imbalance.
The Foundation hosts an annual conference, the International Symposium on Malignant Mesothelioma, which unites doctors, researchers, patients and families, legal advocates, union representatives, and other affected and concerned individuals, to share information and advance mesothelioma research. This year the Symposium takes place June 23-25 in Washington, DC. For more information, please visit http://www.curemeso.org/.

Sokolove Law Launches Online Resource Centers to Help Mesothelioma Victims and Their Families

Wellesley, MA (PRWEB) February 5, 2011
Sokolove Law, a leading provider of legal services and the nation’s most trusted mesothelioma law firm, has re-launched two of its websites to better provide information, resources and support for victims of asbestos-related diseases and their families.
For more than 30 years, Sokolove Law has dedicated its practice to a single mission: making sure everyone has the same access to the justice system, regardless of race or income. Asbestos.net and the Mesothelioma Resource Center (MesoRC.com), Sokolove Law’s two flagship websites focused on mesothelioma law, have been re-launched with this mission in mind. While Asbestos.net focuses on information and legal help related to asbestos diseases, MesoRC.com supplies visitors with news and resources about mesothelioma cancer – including diagnosis, treatments and patient care, as well as basic facts about asbestos, asbestos products and exposure sites. Both re-launched websites now incorporate new designs and features to better help mesothelioma victims visiting the site receive the assistance they need and compensation they deserve.
“We’ve helped bring justice to more than 2,000 victims of asbestos-related diseases, and in doing so have learned a lot about these victims’ health and financial needs,” explains Ricky LeBlanc, Managing Attorney at Sokolove Law. “Our websites have been re-designed to help these people understand the nature of their condition and know that they may be entitled to compensation as a result of a company’s negligence in exposing them to these deadly fibers. Whether a visitor is hoping to learn about treatment options in their area or seeking information about pursuing a mesothelioma settlement or compensation from an asbestos bankruptcy trust, we hope these sites will educate and empower those who may have been affected by asbestos exposure.”
Mesothelioma, a rare and deadly cancer caused by asbestos exposure, affects thousands of people per year. Most people who suffer from mesothelioma have been exposed to asbestos on a regular basis, usually as a result of their work history. People can also develop mesothelioma as a result of secondhand asbestos exposure, which occurs when someone is indirectly exposed to asbestos fibers carried home on a loved one’s clothing or hair. While caring for one’s health takes precedence, ensuring you get the compensation you deserve is a close second.
In addition to providing pertinent asbestos-related information and legal services to victims of asbestos-related diseases, Sokolove Law’s new websites are also keeping the firm at the forefront of the global movement to ban asbestos. Once heralded as a “miracle fiber,” asbestos was widely used in many manufacturing, construction and consumer products. Despite the known health hazards associated with the material, asbestos has not been banned in the United States.
For more information on asbestos and asbestos-related diseases, visit Asbestos.net at http://www.asbestos.net/ or MesoRC at http://www.mesorc.com/. Both sites are continually growing to better provide information to those currently living with or are caring for a victim of mesothelioma.

The Mesothelioma Victims Center Urges All US Navy Veterans Diagnosed With Mesothelioma To Take Advantage Of Their 2011 Initiative

The cornerstone of the Mesothelioma Victims Center's 2011 initiative is to provide an individual just diagnosed mesothelioma with the a world class free service, designed to be unequaled in the United States, especially if they served in the US Navy. The group's free service includes assistance if the mesothelioma victim, needs help with VA, or Social Security disability, a customized report detailing all the healthcare treatment options in the area of the mesothelioma victim, family counseling, and assistance, as well as the names of the best actual mesothelioma trial law firms, or trial attorneys in the US, not a mesothelioma personal injury marketing law firm advertising on cable TV. The group says, "typically a mesothelioma diagnosis comes out of the blue, decades after exposure to asbestos. We went through it ourselves, with a close family member, who served in the US Navy. Nothing is more important to us than being the go to group for all US diagnosed mesothelioma victims, or their family members. It is an amazing honor." For the most comprehensive free service in the United States, victims of mesothelima, or their family members can call the Mesothelioma Victims Center anytime at 866-714-6466, or they can contact the group via its web site at http://MesotheliomaVictimsCenter.Com

(Vocus/PRWEB) February 01, 2011
The Mesothelioma Victims Center is offering victims diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called mesothelioma an unparalleled free service for all US Citizens. Approximately 3000 individuals within the US are diagnosed with mesothelioma each year. Of this group one, out of three mesothelioma victims served in the United States Navy, another one third of all individuals in the US diagnosed with mesothelioma worked in a oil refinery, a shipyard, in a power plant, a mine, a railoroad, for a city, or county municipal water district, as a plumber, demolition construction worker, or auto repair technician. The Mesothelioma Victims Center says, "having gone through mesothelioma ourselves, with a family member, who served in the US Navy, the one thing you learn about this very rare form of cancer is it typically takes decades to show up. It is not uncommon for us to talk with a victim, whose last exposure to asbestos was thirty, forty years ago, or even as far back as World War II." The group says, "there is no other group in the US as passionate about helping victims, and their loved ones, and if you call us, we will make certain you get nothing but the best, which includes the names, and direct contact information for the best mesothelioma trial law firms, or attorneys in the US, not some middleman marketing law firm advertising for individuals, or their family members dealing with a mesothelioma diagnosis." For more information please call the Mesothelioma Victims Center anytime at 866-714-6466, or contact the group via its web site at http://mesotheliomavictimscenter.com/
You just decide who you like the best-no other group in the world does this." http://mesotheliomavictimscenter.com/.
